Ever since storming into the MLL in 2006, the Denver Outlaws have made five consecutive post-season appearances. After winning the Western Conference Championship in 2006, the Outlaws lost in the MLL championship game to Philadelphia Barrage 23-12. In 2007, Philadelphia eliminated Denver again with a 13-12 first-round victory. The past two seasons, the Outlaws have finished in second place, losing to Rochester 16-6 in 2008 and 10-9 to Toronto in 2009.
Previewing the Lizards
After a 13-7 road victory against the Nationals, Long Island finished the regular season with a 7-5 record and the No. 3 seed in the playoffs. The Lizards’ offense is led by attackman Matt Danowski, whose 47 points from 25 goals and 18 assists ranks him second in the league in scoring. Attackman Tim Goettelmann and midfielder Stephen Berger are ranked No. 15 and 16, respectively, in the MLL in scoring. Goettelmann hasrecorded 21 goals with eight assists and Berger has scored 19 goals and eight assists. Defenseman Nicky Polanco has corralled 46 groundballs, while fellow defenseman Parker McKee has one goal and four assists to go along with his 32 groundballs. Goalie Drew Adams leads the MLL with an 11.53 GAA, posting a .519 save percentage.
The Lizards, who dropped both games against the Outlaws this year, posted a 1-1 record against Chesapeake and Boston during the regular season.
Previewing the Cannons
As the No. 1 seed for the MLL Championship weekend, the Boston Cannons recorded an 8-4 regular season record. Led by attackman Matt Poskay, the league’s top-ranked scorer with 45 goals and six assists, the Cannons have three players in the top 10 for scoring. Midfielder Paul Rabil, who is tied for fifth in the MLL in scoring, has recorded 37 points from 19 goals and seven assists, while attackman Kevin Buchanan is tied for ninth with 20 goals and 11 assists. Kyle Sweeney is tied for third among all defenseman with five goals, two assists and 36 groundballs. Goalie Kip Turner leads the MLL with a .595 save percentage. Turner has posted a 7-2 record this year, making 176 saves and recording a 11.70 GAA.
The Cannons were a perfect 3-0 against the Outlaws this year. Boston split the two-game series against Long Island and was 1-2 against Chesapeake in the regular season.
Previewing the Bayhawks
Finishing with a 6-6 record in the regular season, Chesapeake earned the No. 4 seed in the playoffs. Midfielder Peet Poillon is ranked third in the MLL with 41 points from 24 goals and 15 assists. Joining him in the Top-10 in scoring is midfielder Kyle Dixon who is tied for fifth with Boston’s Paul Rabil with 37 points from 19 goals and seven assists. Alex Smith leads all face-off specialists with a .590 face-off percentage, while midfielder Matt Abbott, who has five goals and five assists, leads the Bayhawks with 47 groundballs. Goalie Chris Garrity is second in the MLL with a .559 save percentage. Garrity has also recorded a 6-4 record while posting a 12.92 GAA.
